It was with this in mind that SURFmarket was set up as an ICT marketplace in 1991, by the education sector itself. The intention was for SURFmarket to negotiate with ICT providers on behalf of the institutions connected to SURF. This large-scale purchasing makes SURFmarket an interesting partner for higher educational institutions and university libraries, and for university museums and medical centres. It is also advantageous for providers of software, hardware, services, and content to do business with SURFmarket. Employees and students at educational institutions can order products to use at home via SURFmarket's webshop, SURFspot.nl.
Needless to say, SURFmarket doesn’t deal with this all by itself but actively seeks to cooperate with partners and with the whole SURF family.
